Media Law

The 'Media Law' unit of the Research Centre in Information Law and Society brings together the expertise of nine researchers on various aspects related to the gathering, production, dissemination, moderation and protection of content in the digital and audio-visual worlds. The unit is interested in the relationship between content and freedom of expression and freedom of the press, as well as their reconciliation with other fundamental rights, in particular the right to privacy.

Its members work on topical issues of major importance for any democratic society, such as the regulation of digital platforms, online disinformation, whistleblowing, the watchdog function in a democratic society, the regulation of audio-visual media and the use of artificial intelligence tools to channel, disseminate or block digital content. They are the authors of several publications and regularly speak at conferences and seminars on these topics. The unit is also part of the Namur Digital Institute (NaDI), which groups together the research centres of the University of Namur that are active in the digital field. Some members of the unit also act as experts for international institutions (UNESCO), European bodies (European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe), Belgian public authorities as well as private and public organisations (League for Human Rights, Council for Journalistic Ethics, …).
